Floor Repair Basics

Maintaining a home is hard work. Many times, the maintenance has to be done outside of the property. The reason: the elements of nature. Rain, wind, heat are among these natural elements that contribute to the constant deterioration of a home. However, there are systems, structures, surfaces, and components inside the home that also need maintenance. One of such are floor coverings. Indeed, floor coverings wear out faster than other interior surfaces due to day to day wear and tear. Interestingly, surface damage can, in time, translate to more than just superficial damage. Thus, repairing floors becomes an important maintenance task to do.

There are several layers that work together to provide the structural support to a floor. The first layer of a typical wood-frame floor are the joists, usually 2x10 framing members. These members support the weight of the floor and are usually spaced 16 inches apart.

Right after the joists, you will find the subfloor, which is nailed to the joists. Then, right after the subfloor, most builders install a plywood underlayment. Furthermore, a layer of adhesives may follow. The final layer would be the floor covering, such as carpet, carpet squares, ceramic, etc.

Typical Floor Problems

One common floor problem is moisture. Moisture can ruin the wooden underlayment and also the subfloor. One of the most affected areas with moisture problems are bathrooms.
